As the Environmental Engineer, you’re a key member of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) team for North & Central America (NCA) , reporting to the Senior Manager, EHS.
You will contribute to the success of Ball by coordinating a broad range of environmental, health and safety compliance requirements for the business, including development, implementation and communication of programs and/or processes that allow the business to comply with regulatory requirements and continuously improve environmental, health and safety management systems.
Your Key Areas of Responsibilities Include:
- Develop, implement and maintain Environmental programs to aid in ensuring compliance with Federal, State, Regional and Local EHS regulatory requirements.
- Initiate and influence integration of Environmental policies, procedures and work instructions into the business.
- Perform monthly air emissions calculations for assigned facilities and reports any exceedances to plant and to agencies.
- Oversee source testing for compliance with air permit requirements, including but not limited to protocol submittal for approval, testing company coordination and management, and results reporting.
- Initiate, prepare and ensure submittal of permit applications to environmental regulatory agencies on behalf of assigned Ball manufacturing/R&D operations and negotiate permit conditions to maximize business operational flexibility.
- Support preparation and submittals for Environmental reporting requirements, including but not limited to: EPA (CAA, CWA, RCRA) reports.
- Support plant operations on state and federal environmental regulatory inspections and customer inquiries regarding Ball’s environmental compliance.
- Help to coordinate compliance efforts for regulatory findings, and lead responses to regulatory agencies citations and/or notices of violation.
- Support the performance of documentation of environmental aspects and risk assessments, and adapts the process into the business.
- Assist in identifying, preventing, recommending, controlling and/or eliminating workplace hazards.
- Read, interpret and track federal, state and local environmental regulations that potentially impact the business and support efforts to implement provisions to ensure compliance.
- Train employees on EHS and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Support a culture that promotes individual ownership and responsibility for safety and environmental compliance by coaching and mentoring employees on their roles and responsibilities related to EHS compliance.
- Support the conduct of incident investigations using a problem solving tool with the ultimate goal of identifying true root causes.
- Identify and/or evaluate information technology tools necessary to facilitate EHS job functions, as applicable.
- Participate in the implementation of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 Standards through the Ball Operational Excellence Program.
- Establish and monitor progress toward completion of stated department and business goals and objectives.
What Are We Looking For?
- Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college or work-related experience. Preferred degrees include: Environmental Science or, Chemical, Civil or other Engineering/science related disciplines.
- Minimum 2-4 year(s) in environmental regulations and permitting.
- Demonstrated Skills:
- Capable of understanding business operations to determine applicable regulation and potential business impacts.
- Database management, spreadsheet development, and ability to learn and adapt various software tools for use in EHS.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong problem solving skills and familiarity with tools and methodologies used in problem solving.
- Ability to develop vision for, and execute on, the goals of the EHS organization and Ball’s Sustainability goals.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Self-starter capable of working with minimal, direct instruction from management.
- Ability to complete industrial hygiene and/or other environmental testing requirements, as applicable.
- Working knowledge of the following areas:
- Environmental regulations, legal practices, OSHA requirements, environmental principles, practices, verbiage, and procedures.
- Generally accepted professional practices and procedures.
- Can, end, bottle or other manufacturing/industrial processes.
- Familiarity with ISO 45001 and 140001 requirements.
Compensation & Benefits
- Based in Colorado, this position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site for three (3) or more days per work week (with core collaboration days of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). Travel (20-30%) and local commute between Ball locations and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
- Hiring Salary Range: $72,900 - $95,000 (Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.)
- This role will be eligible to participate in the annual incentive compensation plan.
