Environment, Health & Safety Specialist

Rockville, MD

As a Safety Specialist you will be responsible to advise laboratories on recognition of hazards and mitigation of risk, to manage environmental compliance, and to promote sustainability in alignment with federal and State regulations and GSK Standards.


This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career, these responsibilities include some of the following…

  • Support mitigation of key health and safety risks to our people (GSK personnel, contractors, and visitors) and our reputation (federal, state, and local regulators and external public).
  • Support the implementation of EHS programs at the Rockville Center for Vaccines Research (RCVR) site, verify programs and procedures are effective, and ensure that the site properly identifies and mitigates hazards and risks.
  • Specific responsibilities will include environmental programs (waste, energy, emissions), risk assessment and mitigation, general lab safety, biological and chemical safety, emergency prevention and response, and training.
  • Implement and manage GSK Environmental EHSS Standards for Air Emissions, Effluent & Releases to Water, Waste Management, Energy, and Soil & Groundwater. Monitor and analyze site environmental performance and initiate action to support or correct trends.    Work with service partners, GSK colleagues, and others to drive sustainability goals.
  • Evaluate compliance with federal, State, and local legislation and GSK requirements related to EHS. Stay current with upcoming environmental regulations which may impact site. Perform program audits, facility inspections, and generate recommended corrective actions. Maintain effective relationships with and provide required environmental reporting to local regulators and GSK stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with managers, scientists, and safety representatives to provide EHS technical advice and to coach workers on the effective implementation and management of the EHS programs.
  • Recommend and develop specific safety improvement plans, programs, and trainings based on current trend analysis and EHS performance.
  • Participate in and lead incident investigations to complete root cause analyses and help develop and implement corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Participate as member of the Emergency Response Team and be able to serve as Incident Command.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Environmental Sciences, Occupational Safety or other related scientific or engineering discipline, including chemistry or biological sciences. 
  • Experience in OSHA safety and health regulations in general industry (29 CFR Part 1910).
  • Experience in risk management in any arena
  • Experience in environmental compliance and regulatory requirements (RCRA, EPCRA, CAA, SPCC, CWA)


Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • 1-4+ years of EHS experience in biotechnology area.
  • Ability to collaborate with and influence others at all levels of an organization.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to make complex ideas seem simple and to deliver messages with clarity and impact.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize plans, developing short- and long-term strategies to address complex issues.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment which requires one to successfully be able to change and revise plans quickly to meet demand.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to create and systematically evaluate different alternative solutions to issues, while maintaining compliance to regulations and GSK standards.
  • Excellent attention to detail. “Right-First-Time” deliverable of work products is expected. Must be able to work and make sound decisions with limited supervision or oversight.
  • Experience in the development, implementation, and management of programs related to high risk/high hazard management, risk assessments and control, processes and hazardous agents, health and wellbeing programs, and emergency response.
  • Willingness to occasionally travel.
