The Large Power Systems Division is looking for a Lead Engineer to support the development of Caterpillar Advanced Power Conversion Systems. In this role, you will provide technical direction for development of Power Conversion systems for Caterpillar energy storage system (ESS), fuel cell, and power quality system. Specific products include: Bi-directional Power Inverter (BDP), fuel cell inverter, high power offboard charger and advanced double conversion UPS. This role will collaborate with cooling, battery, fuel cell and power electronics component and control teams along with purchasing and validation teams. In addition to technical collaboration this engineer will be responsible for the design and performance quality of power conversion systems from development through production.


Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and develop next generation power conversion system that will be used for ESS, Cat Power Quality System, MW class stationary fuel cell and electric mining truck.
  • Meet cost, quality, and performance targets for targeted applications.
  • Provide system and troubleshooting expertise for product support and field follow teams.
  • Provide input to technical leaders regarding future technology development.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a bachelor degree in an accredited Electrical Engineering plus 9 years of engineering experience or a master degree in an Electrical Engineering curriculum plus 6-9 years of engineering experience or a doctorate degree in engineering plus 3-5 years of engineering experience.
  • Incumbents must have demonstrated excellent analytical skills and have an extensive understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications.
  • Requires a self-starter with strong technical leadership skills. Must have ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the work group, as well employees in other units, customers, and suppliers.


Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in Power Electronics or related field from an accredited curriculum
  • Experience in Power Converter architecture definition, design, build and validation
  • Experience in Electric Power and Machine Systems, Technology development, NPI experience through GW6
  • Experience with design and development of MW class power conversion system
  • Experience with new product introduction and FMEA based product development.
  • Experience working with suppliers and purchasing to introduce a new product to market.
