Emissions Tool Developer

Who you are

Sustain.Life is looking for a talented solutions creator in the sustainability space with a focus on building tools for scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions accounting and management. The candidate must have a strong working knowledge of the relevant GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain accounting category to develop emissions calculation, data management and related tools for our software application to facilitate both estimates and audit-grade emission inventories. This role reports to our Associate Director of Sustainability and may work closely with our software engineers and product team. We are looking for candidates with experience in at least one of the following areas, which are considered independent projects:


Emissions from investments (GHGP scope 3, category 15)

  • Developing detailed guidance to calculate emissions based on investment-specific method (debt, equity, project finance, and managed investments/client services).
  • Develop calculation tool based on EEIO factors and revenue data


Fuel and energy related emissions (GHGP scope 3, category 3)

  • Develop guidance for collecting supplier-specific data
  • Develop calculation tool to accommodate the average data method
  • T&D losses by country


Product related:

  • Product end of life treatment emissions (GHGP scope 3, category 12)
  • Developing guidance for relevant data collection
  • Assumptions related to consumer waste disposal behavior
  • Experience applying waste-treatment specific-emission factors and factor development
  • Familiarity with government directives on waste treatment of certain products (e.g., electronics) or existing research from industry associations
  • Emissions from processing intermediate products (GHGP scope 3, category 10)
  • Develop guidance for determining energy and waste from product processing based on site-specific or secondary data
  • Knowledge of secondary data sources (e.g., lifecycle databases or industry data)
  • Experience analyzing or integrating information from internal data systems to develop emissions estimates
  • Product use emissions outside of energy consumption (GHGP scope 3, category 11)
  • At minimum, experience analyzing data and calculating direct use emissions; knowledge of direct and indirect use emissions accounting preferred
  • Comfortable developing product related assumptions and developing guidance accordingly (e.g., consumer behavior, product lifetime)
  • Developing useful product emissions intensity metrics


While we’re not looking for someone to perform full product life cycle assessments, an LCA background is helpful for the product categories, especially the following:

  • A background in building lite LCA applications
  • Knowledge of LCI databases
  • Previous work with LCA software
  • Cross-sector experience

This is a fully remote, project-based contractor position with flexible working hours.
