We’re looking for an audio story editor with the skills and appetite to edit a wide variety of podcasts – from daily news to produced interviews to long-form narrative. This person is a versatile storyteller, and can work across a range of shows as an editor, leader, and key collaborator within KQED.
The editor will edit a slate of ongoing podcasts, managing and guiding podcast teams to develop storylines and determine focus for individual episodes and occasional series. They will oversee podcast teams in active production—giving edits and overall direction to the shows. The editor is responsible for the management and optimization of pre-production, production, and post-production workflows for KQED’s podcasts.

This role will work hybrid between working in KQED's newly renovated headquarters and working remotely.

- Oversee and provide timely and in-depth edits on story structure for scripts and mixes for a variety of podcasts, broadcast segments, and assist in writing when necessary.
- Review scripts and rough mixes on both a big picture and a line-by-line basis, and occasionally oversee and develop special series, collaborations, and events for the podcast department.
- Work collaboratively with teams to uphold best practices for fact-checking and audio accessibility
- Manage several podcast team members: providing oversight and guidance, coaching/mentoring as needed, and providing effective performance feedback
- Manage multiple deadlines and clearly communicate those to hosts, editors, producers, and reporters
- Coach podcast producers, hosts
- Oversee creative communication with teams including hosts, production staff and researchers throughout development and production process
- Maintain and adapt systems and production workflows that support deadline-driven creative work for individual shows.
- Assist in the post production process by cutting tape, overseeing the assembly mixes and the scoring of episodes as needed
- Record in the studio and in the field as needed
- Work collaboratively with a wide variety of teams, hosts, producers, and reporters
- Assist the Director and Senior Producer of Podcasts with brainstorming, evaluating and shaping concepts for new shows
- Other duties as assigned
- Minimum of five years of experience producing audio for radio or podcast. Experience with the skills and practice of editing highly preferred, but not required to have held a previous formal editor title
- A journalism background highly preferred
- An ability to listen to raw tape, and identify the perfect details, the need-to-know plot points, and the need-to-hear moments that make a story
- Experience scripting and reviewing longform audio stories (15-20 min or longer)
- Proficiency in creating assemblies in Audition or other DAW
- An eye and ear for detail
- Ability to work collaboratively on a variety of teams
- Ability to remain calm in high-pressure time-sensitive situations with a variety of personalities
