Director, Sustainability

Beautycounter is hiring a leader to join the Sustainability team to drive our sustainability program that encompasses Environmental & Responsible Sourcing programs. This includes leading an emissions reduction strategy and lead business integration initiatives for our climate goals. We recognize the urgency of climate change and are committed to help tackle this global challenge. The Sustainability team drives strategy, programs and engagement across the company and with our partners. In this role, you will be responsible for working across the company to drive and implement emissions reduction strategies across the company and value chain in support of our Climate Goals. This work requires deep internal partnership and integration of sustainability goals and metrics into core business functions. The ideal candidate has experience building, running, and integrating company-wide sustainability initiatives.


In This Role You Will

  • Responsible for leading and tracking corporate sustainability initiatives including three programs: responsible sourcing, sustainable packaging, and climate action
  • Owns the MSC sustainability agenda responsible for all sustainability activities and targets for both our internal operations and our external suppliers.
  • Analyze, develop strategies, and identify opportunities to integrate the net zero program into business partners’ plans, roadmaps, and goals & engage in highly technical discussions with internal teams in partnering with them to develop their decarbonization plans
  • Maintain our programs to sustainably source key raw ingredients such as Mica, Vanilla, and palm oil and identify new responsible sourcing opportunities
  • Partner with Packaging and Marketing functions to develop sustainable and innovative packaging concepts for all new launches and repacks ensuring Beautycounter achieves 2025 packaging goal with Life cycle assessments & waste management/ recycling programs
  • Lead our membership activity for B Corp, Leaping Bunny & RSPO and others
  • Partnering with brands and business units to drive business growth through sustainability programs, Manage internal communications, external storytelling, and third-party partners related to all sustainability programs
  • Analyze, develop strategies, and identify opportunities to integrate the net zero program into business partners’ plans, roadmaps, and goals
  • Partner closely with climate subject-matter experts internally & externally to prioritize problems and solutions and develop strategies to create ownership, accountability, and follow-through from internal teams.
  • Communicate and coordinate with business units, Packaging, Sourcing and Planning teams and senior management by providing insightful analytics to support business decisions
  • Develop and lead the implementation of global procurement sustainability initiatives across identified key categories (ingredients - ingredients, climate, social, and packaging)
  • Developing and implementing a sustainability strategy and program, end-to-end science-based environment, and social/ human rights
  • Ensure sustainability commitments and targets are appropriately embedded into key tools, systems and ways of working
  • Build strong relationships with our cross functional and work together to create a shared vision, ownership, and follow-through by activating the necessary change management, navigating difficult trade-offs, developing innovative solutions, landing quick wins, and influencing vital changes in and across each organization’s processes and behaviors


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of relevant sustainability experience in business integration efforts, especially including delivering complex projects aligned with corporate goals through influence and collaboration
  • Experience establishing partnerships with suppliers, NGO's and industry bodies
  • Significant experience implementing supplier engagement programs to educate suppliers and to help suppliers set targets and goals
  • Specific experience developing a strategy and leading execution of a program where you drive engagement with a scope of internal stakeholders - with the direct intention of influencing and shaping that partner’s goals and roadmaps
  • Experience evaluating, defining and improving end-to-end processes and in managing multiple projects and coordinating with internal staff and external consultants, vendors and other stakeholders
  • Communication experience across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Analytical, problem-solving, negotiation and organizational experience
  • A self starter, with a proven experience to diplomatically resolve issues through understanding conflicting inputs, achieving alignment, and proposing solutions
  • Communications skills, including experience communicating effectively with senior leadership
  • Knowledge of the legal and regulatory framework surrounding sustainability requirements


Pay: $159,000 - $218,000 for work locations in the United States, with individual pay determined by several factors including, but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, education, and training. Salary ranges are determined in good faith by role, level, and location. As a remote-eligible job, salary ranges for specific locations will be provided upon request.


Bonus: Additional compensation includes an annual discretionary bonus based on company and individual performance.
