Director, Research & Development

Position profile:

The Director, R&D will plan, direct and coordinate the research, development, design and improvement for the Waste Management portfolio and serve as a key member of the Surgical Technology R&D Leadership Team.


Responsibilities and duties:

  • Tasked with definition and ongoing refinement of the broader product/business strategy.
  • Will define talent strategy, including succession plans, for self and other key roles within the organization. Additionally, will develop strong leaders and engineering talent to support the Waste Management engineering portfolio.
  • Interacts with senior management or executive levels on matters concerning functional areas, divisions and/or customers.
  • Collaborate with Stryker global organizations for best practices.
  • Drive accountability, consistency, quality, and process standardization across all phases of R&D and throughout the organization.
  • Formulates and recommends research and development guidelines and time lines in accordance with project objectives.
  • Administers an engineering program of high technical competence and judgement and ensures sound technical engineering concepts are applied.
  • Plans and coordinates engineering projects that are completed within cost objectives and times schedules.
  • Coordinates with other units’ control in making changes to existing product specifications or manufacturing processes; or changes due to supply chain influences. Ensures that changes follow the latest technical requirements and organizational guidelines
  • May prepare and correlate short- and long-term engineering plans and programs for design, construction or alteration of activities.
  • Ensures research and development of new technologies/products to support growth of business.
  • May train others in functionally related topics.
  • Will have contact, telephonically and in person, with customers.
  • Will submit periodic reports on the status of research and development projects and related issues.
  • Manages directly or through subordinate supervisors the activities of the Research & Development Department.
  • Contributes to overall departmental goals and priorities and evaluates subordinate's performance based on these goals and priorities.
  • Mentors and develops Research & Development personnel.
  • Responsible for inter-departmental compliance with company policies and corrective actions.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree is required.
  • MS and/or MBA preferred.
  • Minimum 5-7+ years management experience.
  • Minimum 10+ years of medical device manufacturing, FDA, or other regulated industry experience.
  • Must have 510(k) and premarket submission experience.
  • Effective written and oral communications skills.
  • Working knowledge of FDA (GMP/QSR), EU MDR, and ISO requirements.
  • Strong mentorship and demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Proven abilities as a leader and R&D manager.
  • Experience in successfully managing individual contributors, leaders of others, and teams.
  • Ability to interact within all levels of the organization.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and MS Project.
