Director of Legal

As a platform company powering privacy for businesses all over the world, Ethyca processes data, manages users personal rights, automates compliance and helps data-driven businesses scale respectful technology globally. As the first Director of Legal, you will be responsible for all internal legal efforts and manage all areas related related to commercial, contract and privacy counsel necessary both within and external to Ethyca.

Given Ethyca is a data privacy technology system, you will be reporting to the CEO and working directly with Product leadership to make some of the most significant decisions for the company - this is one of the few places in the world where decisions around data literally means handling individuals' most sensitive information with precision on behalf of our customers - here your legal skills will be challenged to scale a rapidly growing company.

We’re looking for people with a strong background in commercial and contract law, comfortable with taking on day-to-day legal operations as well as strategic planning on data privacy issues.

You Will:

Take responsibility for all contract negotiation and management of external legal counsel
Work with other Ethyca leaders in a legal capacity to define the business requirements of Ethyca’s data privacy technology.
Coordinate with financial leadership to optimize performance of legal function across the business.
Work with customer facing teams to ensure our platform, documentation and guidance provides the benchmark for data privacy tools to the technology industry.
Provide support on executive-level legal analysis to keep the leadership team informed on an ongoing basis of legal risks and mitigation activities.
Work with Finance to support C-suite and the leadership team on the production of legal and regulatory recommendations
Proactively identify areas for potential improvements and collaborate with stakeholders on planning and execution

We're Looking For Someone Who Has:

Worked in a fast-paced, high-growth and intense environment where every minute counts.
Previously had a legal advisory role in product or system design/counsel with clients or internal stakeholders.
The ability to thrive on a high level of autonomy and responsibility
Exceptional communication skills, high and low level, written and verbal
High technical proficiency and critical thinking skills to ensure we’re thoughtfully challenging ourselves in the design of our system.
A track record in providing legal counsel cross-functionally to various stakeholder types.

Required Skills and Experience:

J.D degree from an accredited law school Licensed to practice law in New York
6+ years of general or corporate legal background
Strong background meeting regular input review timelines, reporting deadlines and communication of material initial findings
Excellent project management skills and ability to work cross-department in a fast-paced team
Strong communication skills and a proactive attitude towards building relationships
