Director of Data Engineering

New York, NY

As the Director of Data Engineering, you’ll be responsible for our data platform, infrastructure & data warehouse that power our Data Science and Machine Learning teams. You’ll build, manage and mentor a growing team of data engineers and managers and play a key role in technical leadership of the Data organization by developing and executing a technical roadmap. You’ll build relationships with technical and business teams to ensure we provide cutting edge data capabilities to every part of the company. This position is a people manager reporting to our SVP of Data.


What You'll Do:

  • Recruit, lead and mentor a team of talented data professionals, overseeing both data warehouse engineering and data platform engineering
  • Define and develop the technical roadmap aligned with RTR’s vision and strategy
  • Establish and evangelize best practices, frameworks and processes across data engineering and the larger data and tech org
  • Oversee technical strategy and architecture across data integration, data warehousing, data platform, computation and deployment infrastructure
  • Lead metadata management implementation efforts that enable how data will be accessed and used for business reporting, analytics and machine learning
  • Drive the implementation of data governance, data privacy and security related processes
  • Develop strong relationships with data leaders across the company to improve how data and data engineering tools are leveraged 
  • Drive technical innovation by exploring new platforms and technologies 


About You:

  • 6+ years of experience leading and inspiring effective data engineering teams building scalable data engineering platforms 
  • Experience and passion for modern data architecture and data modeling
  • Strong business acumen and expertise contributing to roadmap and strategy discussions
  • Familiarity with programming languages (e.g. Python, Java), cloud computing platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP), cloud based data warehouses (e.g. Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery), BI Tools (e.g. Looker, Tableau), scheduling solutions (e.g. Prefect, Airflow), and infrastructure as code tools (e.g. Terraform, Ansible)
  • Passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community
  • Experience with data governance and data security
  • Strong knowledge and experience with iterative software development processes and continuous delivery
