Director of Compensation

Remote

Upstart is in a period of rapid growth and the People Operations team is foundational to our continued success as we scale. You will be joining an organization with engaged founders and leaders, strong values (practiced daily!) and operational rigor and discipline. Come help us build the culture and the processes that will enable continued success for our employees and borrowers.

As the Director of Compensation you will join the People Operations leadership team to help us build the financial rewards programs for our next phase of growth at Upstart. Reporting directly to the Vice President of People Operations you will build compensation programs that fit our Upstart values and compensation philosophy - from job architecture fundamentals, to our semi-annual promotion and compensation cycle, to fair and competitive base pay and bonus programs, all the way through to executive compensation and Board management. At Upstart we recognize that compensation programs underpin and reinforce the things that matter most to our team. Therefore we are looking for someone who has analytical and compensation skills, coupled with a passion for building programs that help people succeed. A successful Upstart People Operations leader builds programs based on principles rather than rules, and knows how to adjust fairly when the circumstances call for it.

  • Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote
  • Time Zone Requirements - Much of the People Ops team and the majority of the Upstart Leadership team operates on the west coast time zone, however you will have many stakeholders working on EST. Your hours can be flexible based on your location, schedule and preference.
  • Travel Requirements - This team has regular onsite collaboration sessions. These occur a maximum of 3 days per Month, primarily in San Mateo. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Build our compensation programs based on our compensation philosophy: Help us build programs aligned with our values that are competitive, fair and responsible. This includes base, bonus, equity and spot bonus programs. You will be responsible for everything from design to execution including, but not limited to, modeling, project planning, communications and training.
  • Attract industry leading talent: Partner closely with our recruiting team to execute a new hire offer strategy that is competitive and fair.
  • Execute on our executive compensation strategy: Partner with the VP of People Operations, CEO, and Compensation Committee to ensure competitive pay packages aligned with our business priorities for our most senior hires.
  • Build and manage a world class compensation organization: You will start with two members of the compensation team and will continue to scale the team with the company growth.
  • Design and implement compensation tools: Lead the selection and deployment of better tools for planners and Upstarters - including tools that make it easier to make decisions and understand individual compensation packages.
  • Job architecture: Help us evolve our job architecture as we upgrade our HR systems and software
  • Compliance and fair pay: You will work with internal partners and ensure compliance with reporting and global, federal, state and local requirements.

What we’re looking for:

Minimum requirements:

  • 7+ years relevant work experience, preferably with experience either in compensation consulting, or “in house” compensation at a large or high-growth company.
  • Experience working in tech
  • People management experience
  • Experience and knowledge in data sources and compensation analysis covering all elements of compensation including equity.
  • Experience with Radford, Option Driver, or other benchmarking surveys and tools.
  • Excellent Excel skills including advanced features (pivot tables, look-ups, macros a plus).

Preferred qualifications:

  • A systems mind-set. Demonstrated ability to build scalable programs and solutions, rather than to simply address point solutions.
  • Stellar communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to take initiative and build strong, productive relationships.
  • Experience working with executive stakeholders including Boards of Directors and C-level leadership teams

What you’ll love:

  • Competitive Compensation (base + bonus & equity)
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Personal Development and Technology & Ergonomic Budgets
  • Life insurance and disability benefits
  • Clubs and Activities (Game Nights, Fitstarters, Superwomen, Book Club, Investing Club, Money Discussions, Photography Club and Basketball teams)
  • Generous vacation policy
  • 401(k) and Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP)
  • Catered lunches + snacks & drinks
