Director, Environmental Health, Safety & Compliance

The Director of Environmental, Health Safety and Compliance. (EHS) will report directly to the VP of Supply Chain and will work closely with the Operations management teams. This position is responsible for the overall creation, development, and maintenance of effective EHS and risk management programs for the organization and its projects. This leader will deliver results through building a culture of safety assurance through the principles, processes and practices of behavioral based safety and risk management principles.

Position Description


Responsibilities (May perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned).

1. Drives the organization’s strategic direction and is responsible for identification and tactical implementation of corporate safety related initiatives and programs throughout the organization.

2. Leads all associates and contractors to achieve zero safety and environmental incidents built on the principles of personal accountability, influencing behaviors, leading indicators, and a culture of active employee engagement.

3. Leads and coaches management to create a sustained culture of behavioral based safety and risk management and ensures compliance in all areas of EHS.

4. Completes risk assessments of people, facilities, and their emergency responses. Creates a high performing culture of risk awareness. Ensures that the risk assessment is inclusive of all people, security, and facility risks.

5. Establishes a well-sustained Emergency Response (ER) program that is responsive, effective, and provides reliable coverage.

6. Establishes a security program that protects people, products, and facilities from internal and external harm.

7. Directs the organization’s environmental sustainability efforts in a manner that promotes continuous improvement in reduction of the overall environmental footprint.

8. Coordinates with senior management and function heads for the continuous improvement of the Business Continuity Plan.

9. Directs the analysis and evaluation of company asset/liability management strategies; insures protection of company assets through property, liability, and workers’ compensation insurance coverages and oversight of policies.

10. Coordinates with site leadership, site safety managers and safety committees to ensure that all aspects of the company’s EHS results and programs are working in concert and that effective leadership is being exercised in each area.

11. Maintains detailed safety performance data, analyze trends, report on statistics, and manage non-compliance. Establishes consistent, effective processes for managing all near misses, hazard/accident investigations and reports. Assures timely issuance of safety alert communications, alert tracking, and documentation of alert closings.

12. Develops a comprehensive risk management and sustainability program with short- and long-term goals & objectives. Collaborates with internal departments and external resources to ensure the integration of enterprise safety, security and risk initiatives and practices. Models safety, security and risk leadership behaviors to management, staff, and associates.

13. Educates and informs others on up-to-date knowledge of regulations and codes relating to personnel safety, process safety, environmental compliance, security, and fire/explosion protection. Coordinates outside sources for training, audits, analysis, or other services deemed necessary.

14. Establishes internal and/or acceptable external subject matter expertise for all risks, standards and compliance expectations and requirements, including LOTO, Fire & Explosion, Process Safety Management, Hazard Analysis, HAZOP, etc.

15. Creates, supports, and implements policies and practices and programs to provide assurance that complies with all federal, state, and local EHS regulatory requirements. Coordinates and interfaces with applicable external agencies including OSHA, State Environmental Agencies, law enforcement, consultants, and insurance representatives.

16. Manages people, processes, budgets, performance management, compliance activities, and associate development as required by the job.

17. Ensures company utilizes industries latest and best practices.

18. Develops a culture that embodies a culture of safety excellence.

19. Recommends, tests, and implements proven safety initiatives, systems, technologies, processes, and programs that all associates can rely on.


Position Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred or equivalent work experience.

• 10+ years of experience, preferably in Safety and Environmental responsibility in a distribution or manufacturing environment, including managing cross functional teams, and operating at a senior level.

• 10+ years leading, designing, managing, and evaluating behavioral sustainable strategies & programs.

• 10+ years of leadership in multi-facility, geographically diverse organization.

• Ability to effectively manage and delegate while maintaining forward motion on key results and deliverables.

• Proven team player skills with ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships.

• Strong mentoring, training, and coaching to colleagues.

• Accomplish goals through partnerships built on mutual trust, fairness, integrity, and honesty.

• Develop long and short-range plans on sound knowledge of best practices in safety and health, and disaster recovery through effective partnerships.

• Intermediate knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).

• Business acumen, statistical and analysis skills including the ability to develop, implement and monitor metrics.
