The Global Commercial Services (GCS) Legal Team is seeking a Director & Counsel to support the U.S. Small Business Credit Card business. The position will work closely with business clients and legal professionals in the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) to provide legal advice on a wide range of issues related to American Express’s proprietary and co-brand credit cards.


How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Provide legal advice on new product and feature development, credit card marketing, card member communications, and rewards programs 
  • Advise business partners and other stakeholders on the design and fulfillment of credit card benefits 
  • Draft and review benefit agreements
  • Partner with Line of Business Compliance and Content Management Group to draft, review and approve advertising claims and disclosures 
  • Provide legal support for credit card lending features, treatments, and strategy 
  • Apply regulatory subject matter expertise, with a particular emphasis on Truth in Lending Act and UDAP
  • Participate as part of a team of seasoned attorneys and legal managers, providing leadership for practice group- and GCO-wide projects 


Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant legal experience
  • Bachelor’s degree & J.D.
  • Admitted to New York Bar or eligibility to do so


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the legal field and its intersection with the small business credit card business
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong leadership skills and strong customer focus
  • Ability to generate creative and innovative solutions to client issues 
  • Ability to interpret and apply law and regulation in a practical, hands-on, commonsense manner
  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both written and oral format
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with GCO colleagues and business clients
  • Capacity to be agile and pivot appropriately when challenged with new information or evolving circumstances
  • Strong process-management skills and ability to identify and implement process enhancements
  • Self-motivated, high level of personal energy and commitment 
  • Experience applying UDAP and the Truth in Lending Act 
  • Experience in development and marketing of financial products is a plus


Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 Annually + Bonus + Equity (if applicable) + Benefits
