Gannett is seeking a Director, Compensation to provide strategic solutions through the design of competitive and cost-effective company-wide compensation programs. She/he will lead a team providing consultative services including, but not limited to, analyzing job requirements, evaluating positions by grade level, FLSA status determinations, pay actions, and designing and administrating a variety of short-term incentive programs. The Director, Compensation will also lead project management for annual compensation projects, prepare materials for submission to the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors, and provide strategic direction for various compensation survey initiatives.

Base Salary: $170,000 - $190,000/annually

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a team of compensation professionals to support the evolving needs of the business.
  • Responsible for the design, development, and implementation of market-competitive and cost-effective salary and short-term incentive programs, including sales commission plans.
  • Actively provide input and recommendations in setting compensation philosophy, strategy, and vision to align with the company’s mission and objectives.
  • Review organizational structure, job evaluations, and position grade leveling to ensure consistency across the company.
  • Ownership of FLSA classifications and compliance.
  • Review, analyze, and make recommendations on programs including base salary, short-term incentives, and variable pay programs, accounting for internal and external competitiveness.
  • Conduct and supervise participation in compensation surveys to determine and maintain a competitive position and recommend changes to ensure that compensation objectives are met.
  • Develop techniques to compile, prepare, and present data in response to special requests and annual processes.
  • Educate and consult with HR business partners and business leaders on the interpretation of compensation policies and programs.
  • Maintain an external focus on best practices, regulatory requirements, and the competitive environment.
  • Collaborate early and often with partners in finance, accounting, legal, and HR.
  • Build open and honest relationships with peers and business clients.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as they arise.



  • The position requires a bachelor’s degree and 10 years of demonstrated compensation experience, with 6 years of management experience.
  • Certified Compensation Professional accreditation is a plus.
  • Deep expert knowledge of current market trends and leading compensation practices.
  • Ability to develop and blend compensation philosophy, best-in-class compensation methods and programs, and business needs.
  • Design and delivery of sales and non-sales compensation programs.
  • Expert level technical skills: Microsoft Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint), financial acumen, problem-solving, and analytics.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, communication, enthusiasm, and positive outlook.
  • Advanced proficiency with compensation-related and HRIS systems

The annualized base salary for this role will range between $119,700 and $247,000. Base compensation is reflective of many factors, including, but not limited to, the market in which one lives/works, individual education level, skills, certifications and experience. Note: variable compensation is not reflected in these figures and based on the role, may be applicable.
