Director, Communications

The main focus of this position is to lead Schwab’s Employee Communications Center of Excellence (COE), one of six such COEs within the company’s Corporate Communications group. The Employee Communications COE is responsible for designing and deploying standards of care and principles that align communications activities under a shared governance framework and increase their effectiveness across the company. The Director, Employee Communications, will also manage the Employee Communications Community, a cross-functional, integrated group of communicators across Schwab responsible for informing and engaging a variety of employee audiences at the corporate and enterprise or business unit level.


This role will collaborate with partners across Corporate Communications, Corporate Relations, and Marketing to design, consult and inform the development of impactful communications programs that advance the company’s purpose, values, brand reputation, and culture in collaboration with senior leaders and other Corporate Relations functions


The Director, Employee Communications, will support a strong Corporate Relations culture of curiosity and continuous improvement by engaging the Employee Communications Community across multiple channels, using Agile methods, technology, and best practices to drive consistency, innovation, and effectiveness. This position will ensure the collective group is supported by a common framework that enables each member to reach their intended audiences and deliver measurable outcomes that ultimately advance Schwab’s strategic goals and initiatives.

  • Employ a One Schwab approach to engage and encourage meaningful cross-functional collaboration, aligned with industry-leading communication best practices, with all Corporate Communications COEs and Corporate Relations senior leadership.
  • Offer strategic guidance and execution support that tailors communications strategies to the needs, goals, behaviors, and attitudes of each priority audience while helping our employees more efficiently and confidently find, understand, and act upon critical information.
  • Identify the appropriate standards by which we measure employee communications effectiveness, handling data pulls, and coordinating with colleagues to produce regular scorecards indicating our progress.
  • Design dynamic communications governance principles and frameworks for the Employee Communications COE that help employee communicators across the firm drive awareness, engagement, and support for the company's strategic goals and objectives.
  • Partner with other Corporate Relations COEs, colleagues, and teams to develop and implement effective internal thought-leadership opportunities for key executives to humanize the company's purpose and strategic objectives at the enterprise level in a hybrid working environment.
  • Support culture initiatives (e.g., Employee Appreciation Day, D&I and Employee Resource Groups engagements), in partnership and/or alignment with the Strategic Initiatives and Transformation Team, via effective communications programs that are consistently implemented across employee audiences and channels.
  • Act as a steward for Corporate Relations, working with executive leadership and key business partners to design communication solutions that address issues/opportunities discovered through research and feedback loops.

As part of the Employee Communications team, this role will provide counsel, coaching, and strategic internal communications support for cross-business line initiatives to senior leaders and business partners firm-wide to:

  • Help employees understand the organization's strategy and priorities - where the company is going, why it matters, and how they contribute.
  • Help shape the company’s reputation as a great place to work.
  • Help people leaders paint a compelling vision of the future and support their teams in navigating through change.
  • Evangelize a One Schwab approach to employee communications through best-in-class processes and standards, and strong governance.
  • Use data and analytics to measure communications effectiveness, counsel colleagues and business partners, and influence strategic decision making.
  • Cultivate a curious, compassionate, and collaborative communications culture, and drive and engaging employee experience across the company.


What you have

They are experienced at designing and building upon established processes and standards of care and exhibit a willingness to explore new methods, technologies, and best practices. They are skilled at strategic decision-making, building consensus, creative problem-solving, iterative development, and using communications to drive business goals in partnership with colleagues and business partners.


A premium is placed on high performance, outstanding relationship skills, a thoughtful point-of-view, discretion with critical/confidential information, Agile development methods, and the savvy to balance the needs of the business unit and its leader(s) within the broader context of the firm’s goals and priorities, as well as other key audiences such as clients and stockholders.


Functional:

  • A consistent track record for strategic employee communications program visioning, planning, execution, and measurement
  • Ability to creatively troubleshoot and to recommend and influence solutions
  • Experience recommending and carrying out a mix of effective communication channels, which may include speeches and presentations, internal meetings (webcasts, open Q&As, town halls), high-touch experiences, leadership messages (written, audio, or video), feedback tools, and social media content.
  • Outstanding communications skills including listening, interpretation, story-lining, writing, and strong decision-making skills about when, how, what, and to whom to communicate
  • The ability to distill complex issues and information into simple, digestible, and impactful messages for audiences of diverse roles and levels, using a variety of communications channels
  • Strong project management skills: ability to define success criteria, identify project risks and opportunities, bring in and partner with core business leaders, and effectively lead scope, teams, timelines, details, and budgets
  • Proven meeting facilitation experience fostering efficient and effective collaboration leading to desired outcomes
  • Prior experience on integrated communications teams and/or with integrated approaches for achieving maximum impact; previous HR support experience preferred, but not required
  • Organizational change certification is preferred, but not required
  • Bachelor's degree and 12+ years of experience in a prior Communications role

  • Excellent personal presence and ability to provide strategic counsel to senior leaders and key team members
  • Success leading through change by influencing and gaining alignment among diverse views and levels in the organization
