Creative Manager

The IN-STORE CREATIVE MANAGER oversees and manages the In-Store Creative Team, consisting of 3-5 graphic designers. Reports to Senior Director, Visual Merchandising and Store Design

The In-store Creative Manager is responsible for leading, designing and executing in-store signage and seasonal 3-D displays for all facets of the 1600+ PetSmart stores. The ideal candidate loves pets and is excited about making the In-store experience engaging, enjoyable, informative, and helpful. Being able to see the store through the eyes of our customer or “Pet Parent” is essential to success in this role. This person leads their team to inspiring creative solutions while visually communicating marketing strategies and supporting business goals.  Candidate must be able to develop brand signage, seasonal displays/tool kits, directional signage, informative materials, etc. in a fast paced, deadline driven environment. Candidate must also understand how to design to an established brand architecture and lead the team to adapt that architecture to create successful design solutions. The role requires clear articulation of creative strategy and the ability to present concepts and executions to cross-functional partners. Balancing creative thinking and interpersonal skills, this person will lead design teams and is responsible for overseeing the output of team members and developing their skill sets.



  • Communicates clearly with internal partners to understand marketing strategy, design directives and messaging hierarchy
  • Provides creative input to influence the development of strategies and objectives.
  • Translates project intent/marketing strategy and prioritizes design directives for the In-store Creative Team
  • Provides design direction and guidance to team. Inspires, motivates and coaches direct reports to reach their fullest potential. Able to teach by example as well as guide though diplomatic interpersonal skills.
  • Creates inspiring, compelling signage and displays that bring the Petsmart customer experience to life in-store.
  • Ensures that all projects meet scheduling requirements and is conscious of the effects of design decisions on budgetary constraints.
  • Presents design projects for review at multiple stages of development and is able to clearly articulate design executions.
  • Creates a team environment that encourages open discussion and collaboration within Creative and cross-functional teams
  • Possesses a high degree of ownership and initiative with the ability to focus on details as well as the big picture.
  • Thrives in a collaborative, corporate environment with a professional and positive attitude, shares ideas in meetings and can manage conflicting feedback
  • Stays current on social, cultural, global and Visual Merchandising trends, understanding their potential impact to the business.



  • Mastery in Adobe Creative Suite (In-Design, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft software applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Experience with Workfront is a plus.
  • Experience with SketchUp or design of 3-D signs, logos and displays is a plus.
  • Technical knowledge of file preparation and procedures.
  • Knowledge of signage hardware, substrates, and printing techniques.
  • Thorough understanding and application of the principles and elements of design
  • Demonstrated sensibility for type, color and page layout and visual problem-solving.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Motivated, flexible, detail-oriented, with proven organizational skills
  • Experience working in a retail creative environment a plus.



  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in an in-house creative department or marketing/ad agency
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience
