Communications Manager

Seguin, TX

Caterpillar has an exciting opportunity for a Communication Manager. In this position, you will provide communications expertise and support for the Industrial Powers Systems Division (IPSD), supporting the IPSD Communications team, Lead HR Manager, department General Managers, HR managers and/or strategic initiative(s)/ project(s). The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and maintain high standards as this role will include high-level tactical communications support for a number of groups in the business including senior leaders across the organization.


IPSD is a high performing team with a workforce of over 8500 based in 16 countries across the world. The division is made up of several groups supporting a wide customer base through diverse product and service offerings. The engine and power generation teams are accountable for designing, manufacturing, selling and supporting world class engines and generator sets for the Caterpillar, Perkins and FG Wilson brands. The Caterpillar Defense team provides standard products, modification of existing products, or entirely new products, to branches of the military and to U.S. federal civilian agencies. The Energy & Transportation Purchasing group are accountable for purchasing and sourcing across a number of divisions, including IPSD.


Job purpose: To provide consultation and support on a variety of internal and external communications assignments.


The incumbent is an effective practitioner with experience as a communications consultant. The communications assignments will be broad, complex and challenging in nature.


Job duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • The focus of the position is to support the development and delivery of communications for the IPSD Large Engines group, as well as the development, support and governance of the Large Engines strategy. The position will also provide communication support for the Sales, Marketing, Services and Parts group and divisional communications as required.
  • In addition, this position is responsible for facility communications, supporting all IPSD Texas locations to include a focus on production employees.
  • The successful candidate will work as part of a global team and be based in Seguin, Texas. Customers will be based at multiple locations including Seguin, Schertz, San Antonio, and Houston, Texas; Mossville, Illinois; Peterborough, UK and Hosur, India.
  • Ensure development and production of communication materials to achieve departmental objectives aligned with divisional and corporate objectives.
  • Responsible for deliverables that include, but are not limited to, speeches, video scripts, presentations, newsletter articles, press releases, website and internal all-employee meetings; working on multiple communications activities both internally and/or externally. The position will manage several non-repeating projects, both internally and externally, through completion.
  • Internal communication outlets utilized will include newsletters, web sites, videos/streaming media, employee meetings, news releases, presentations, correspondence, special events, cascades, etc.
  • External communications will include support for the community outreach activities, managing local media relations and providing liaison with Corporate Public Affairs where necessary.
  • Perform active consulting functions with one or more of the following: general managers, global business process owners, executive leaders, special interest groups, suppliers, agencies and other groups.
  • Provide support and coaching to less experienced communications representatives across our global locations.
  • Work effectively across functional boundaries to deliver communication solutions – partnering with our internal marketing group, Corporate Public Affairs and other communicators across IPSD as well as with external groups.
  • This position acts as an advisor or consultant to senior management on communications, developing and executing communication plans for a variety of local and global initiatives.
  • The position works to develop innovative processes or methods to best use resources or technology in meeting the quality goals.
  • The position manages the completion of its own work assignments, as well as planning, scheduling, monitoring and reviewing work of subordinates is required. The position is responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates.
  • Some travel required (Less than 25% of working time).


Basic Qualifications:

  • A college or university degree in marketing, communications or a related field.
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible communications-related experience
