Assistant General Counsel

New York, NY

This position is suited for a lawyer looking to transition in-house to a growing not-for-profit managing property that supports the unhoused and survivors of intimate partner abuse. Expertise in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts. Supporting research in the crafting of policies and procedures that impact the entire agency. Lawyers currently working in government or other public sector roles are encouraged to apply. Lawyers with firm experience advising on regulatory affairs and performing transactional work are a good fit. The Legal Affairs Division is a growing dynamic key leadership team member. The Division supports the entire agency and is involved in every aspect of the organization. We work collaboratively and value diverse opinions.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drafting and negotiating commercial contracts.
  • Oversee & track insurance requirements for the agency and document it in a database. Ensure that all contracts have current insurance requirements. Oversee paralegal to support insurance related work.
  • Research compliance requirements embedded in contract documents between the agency and regulatory bodies.
  • Research & draft policies & procedures to reflect compliance rules.
  • Work with the Deputy General Counsel to review current agency policies & procedures and draft an action plan for collaborating with relevant organization team members to update and revise existing policies & procedures. documents.
  • Support Enterprise Risk Management policies as a subset of compliance.
  • Participate in weekly department team meetings.
  • Engage with other agency leadership team members.
  • Review and respond to requests for legal services.
  • Attending board meetings.
  • Serve as the legal liaison on various agency work groups.
  • Engage in other activities that are relevant to the position.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS, EDUCATION & ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Contract drafting & negotiation for goods and services $1M and under.
  • Research on legal issues relating to programs, including legislative and regulatory issues impacting the organization’s delivery of services.
  • Excellent research skills demonstrated through the drafting of legislation and public policy preferred.
  • Experience working in diverse environments.
  • Some familiarity with municipal government contracts or other complex commercial contracts.
  • Interest in not-for-profit mission driven work
  • Present ideas in writing and oral form.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE

  • Law degree from accredited law school.

  • A minimum of three years’ legal experience in government, law firm or not-for-profit.
  • Exceptional technology-based skills demonstrated through familiarity with enterprise software, software as a system and other software tools such as contract management software or project management tools such as Monday.com.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to or experience with domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, trauma, particularly in communities of color and among LGBTQ and other disenfranchised populations.
  • Strong legal, analytical, administrative, and written and oral communication skills
  • Keen contract drafting & negotiation skills for goods and services.
  • Interpersonal skills, including social and emotional intelligence.
  • Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines.


SPECIFICATIONS FOR PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Will be required to read printed and handwritten materials.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at a time.
