3D Lead

TikTok is seeking a full-time 3D lead to lead the 3D design team in making effects and other AR experiences for our mobile apps. The 3D lead will serve as art director and supervisor for all 3D assets. In addition, the 3D lead will help guide the development of the 3D team and push artistic and technological standards. The ideal candidate has experience with 3D art direction in a real-time environment, and possesses both design and management skills.


The ideal candidate must be comfortable in a start-up and data-driven decision-making environment where creative iteration and A/B testing is the norm. This position is a senior role responsible for building, growing and mentoring a high performing creative team.


Responsibilities

Provide artistic and technical direction for real-time 3D assets during every step of the process, from modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, and in-engine look.

  • Manage multiple short-term and long-term projects at the same time. Develop proposals for long-term projects.
  • Manage the 3D artist team. Assign an appropriate workload to artists, and mentor and guide artists in their career development.
  • Collaborate and communicate with multiple departments to fulfill design requests.
  • Work with developers and technical artists to continuously improve our real-time engine.
  • Keep the team updated on the latest developments in real-time 3D graphics and AR technology, and guide the team in innovating.
  • Maintain documentation of best practices and tech notes.
  • Craft long-term artistic and technological goals for the 3D team.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in games, mobile apps, or other real-time 3D related fields, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Senior-level portfolio that demonstrates design skills in Autodesk Maya, Substance Painter, zBrush, Adobe Photoshop. Portfolio should contain work breakdown examples showcasing PBR workflow.
  • Excellent communication and people skills. Able to deliver feedback and provide direction to artists. Able to communicate with other departments and non-designers.
  • Written or video tutorials, teaching experience, magazine articles, or any other mentoring material that demonstrates a capacity to guide others.


Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with working with international partners in different time zones
  • Strong interest in and experience with AR technology, social media, or short-form video
